An exceptional painted and lacquered gesso and timber double saddle Carousel Horse, American Circa 1890/1900
Overall height, 187cm high, 200cm long, 35cm wide
attributed to the famous carousel carver, Marcus Illinois, of MC Illinois and Sons, America.
This magnificent carousel horse is a rare example of its kind, being made originally for a ride on Coney Island, called the "Derby Racer" for one or two adult riders carved with a twin saddle, where riders were four abreast on the Carousel.
It is a very rare collectors piece, only a few survive now in the world. It has been mounted on a later brass and metal stand would look superb in a large room as a star decorative piece.
